Why We Use Organic Acids Testing (OAT) for Children on the Autism Spectrum

If you've read our previous blog about The Wellness Way approach to autism, you know that we believe every child deserves an individualized investigation into their health—not just a diagnosis.

Instead of asking, "What diagnosis does this child have?" we ask, "What is this child's body trying to tell us?"

One of the most valuable tools we use to help answer that question is the Organic Acids Test (OAT).

While the OAT does not diagnose autism, it can provide valuable information about how the body is functioning behind the scenes. It helps us identify patterns that may contribute to inflammation, digestive issues, nutrient deficiencies, oxidative stress, and other factors that can affect a child's overall health and well-being.

What Is an Organic Acids Test?

The Organic Acids Test is a simple urine test that measures dozens of metabolic byproducts produced as your child's body breaks down food, makes energy, and interacts with the bacteria and yeast living in the gut.

Think of it like looking at the body's "metabolic fingerprints."

Instead of only telling us what is present, the OAT can give us clues about how well different systems are functioning.

The results can help us build a more complete picture of what's happening beneath the surface.

Why Does This Matter for Children with Autism?

Many children on the autism spectrum experience challenges that extend beyond communication or behavior.

Parents frequently report concerns such as:

  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea

  • Bloating and abdominal discomfort

  • Frequent yeast infections

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Food sensitivities

  • Fatigue

  • Hyperactivity

  • Mood fluctuations

  • Difficulty concentrating

While these symptoms don't occur in every child, they often point toward underlying physiological imbalances that deserve further investigation.

The OAT gives us objective data that can help guide that process.

Looking for Clostridia

One of the most well-known reasons practitioners use the OAT in children with autism is to evaluate markers associated with Clostridia species.

Certain Clostridia bacteria can produce compounds that interfere with normal neurotransmitter metabolism and nervous system function. The OAT measures metabolites such as HPHPA, which may be elevated when certain Clostridia species are overrepresented.

If these markers are elevated, they don't prove disease or establish a diagnosis. Instead, they give us another clue that the gut microbiome may need closer attention.

Rather than guessing, we can use that information to develop a more personalized plan.

Beyond Clostridia: What Else Can the OAT Show?

One of the biggest strengths of the Organic Acids Test is that it looks at much more than the gut.

Yeast Overgrowth

The test includes markers associated with yeast, such as Candida.

Excess yeast can contribute to digestive discomfort, skin issues, sugar cravings, and inflammation.

Understanding whether yeast may be playing a role helps us determine whether additional testing or targeted support is appropriate.

Mitochondrial Function

The brain is one of the most energy-demanding organs in the body.

The OAT evaluates markers involved in energy production within the mitochondria, the "powerhouses" of our cells.

When these pathways aren't functioning optimally, the body may struggle to produce energy efficiently.

Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress occurs when the body's production of damaging free radicals exceeds its antioxidant defenses.

The OAT includes markers that can help us assess whether oxidative stress may be placing additional strain on the body.

This information can help guide strategies to support the body's natural antioxidant systems.

Vitamin and Nutrient Needs

Many nutrients act as essential cofactors for metabolism.

The OAT can reveal patterns that suggest increased need for nutrients involved in energy production and nervous system function, including certain B vitamins and other key cofactors.

This allows us to personalize recommendations rather than relying on generic supplementation.

Neurotransmitter Metabolism

The OAT includes markers related to the metabolism of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.

While these markers do not directly measure brain neurotransmitter levels, they can provide helpful insight into metabolic pathways involved in their production and breakdown.

When interpreted alongside a child's history, symptoms, and other laboratory findings, they contribute to a more complete understanding of overall health.

Why We Don't Guess

It's common for families to arrive at our office after trying countless supplements they found online.

Probiotics.

Digestive enzymes.

Candida cleanses.

Methylated vitamins.

Fish oil.

Magnesium.

Herbal protocols.

Sometimes they help.

Sometimes they don't.

Without testing, it's difficult to know why something isn't working.

One child may need support for bacterial overgrowth.

Another may primarily struggle with yeast.

Another may have significant oxidative stress and nutrient deficiencies.

The Wellness Way philosophy is simple: Test. Don't guess.

Objective information allows us to create recommendations that are tailored to the individual child instead of following the latest trend.

The OAT Is Only One Piece of the Puzzle

Although the Organic Acids Test is one of our favorite tools, it's rarely the only test we use.

Depending on the child, we may also recommend:

  • Comprehensive stool testing to evaluate digestion, inflammation, beneficial bacteria, and potential pathogens

  • Blood analysis

  • Nutritional testing

  • Additional evaluations based on the child's history and symptoms

No single test tells the entire story.

Instead, we combine multiple pieces of information to understand the whole child.

Our Goal Is Better Health, Not Just Fewer Symptoms

At The Wellness Way, we believe every child deserves a personalized approach.

The Organic Acids Test helps us move beyond assumptions and uncover important clues about gut health, metabolism, energy production, nutrient status, and oxidative stress.

These insights don't change an autism diagnosis, but they can help us better understand factors that may be affecting a child's overall health and quality of life.

Because when we stop guessing and start looking deeper, we can make more informed decisions about how to support the body.

That's what The Wellness Way is all about.

Ready to Take a Deeper Look?

If your child is on the autism spectrum and you're looking for answers beyond symptom management, our team at The Wellness Way North Scottsdale is here to help.

Through comprehensive testing, including the Organic Acids Test when appropriate, we work to identify the underlying imbalances that may be contributing to your child's health challenges. From there, we create a personalized plan designed to support the whole child, with the goal of helping them feel, function, and thrive as well as possible.
