Cholesterol: Why Your Brain and Hormones Need It

For years, cholesterol has been painted as something we should fear—but cholesterol is not simply a number on a lab report. It is an essential substance your body needs to function, particularly when it comes to brain health, hormones, cell membranes, and vitamin D production.

The goal isn't to eliminate cholesterol. The goal is to understand it and support the systems that help your body use and regulate it appropriately.

Your Brain Is Rich in Cholesterol

Your brain contains a significant amount of cholesterol, where it plays important structural and functional roles.

Cholesterol is a major component of cell membranes and helps maintain the structure of neurons and other brain cells. It is also involved in the formation and maintenance of myelin—the protective, cholesterol-rich covering surrounding many nerve fibers that helps nerve signals travel efficiently.

Cholesterol also contributes to the production and function of molecules involved in communication between brain cells.

This doesn't mean that "higher cholesterol is always better." Rather, it highlights why cholesterol itself shouldn't automatically be viewed as the enemy.

Your brain needs cholesterol.

Cholesterol Is a Building Block for Your Hormones

This is especially important when we talk about women's health.

Cholesterol is the starting material your body uses to produce steroid hormones, including:

  • Estrogen

  • Progesterone

  • Testosterone

  • Cortisol

  • Aldosterone

In other words, cholesterol sits near the beginning of the hormone-production pathway.

That doesn't mean eating more cholesterol will automatically increase your hormones. Hormone production is much more complex than that. Your body tightly regulates cholesterol production and hormone synthesis, and many other factors—including thyroid function, nutrient status, adrenal function, liver health, and overall metabolic health—play a role.

But it does mean that cholesterol is not something your body can simply do without.

Cholesterol Helps Build Healthy Cells

Every cell in your body has a cell membrane, and cholesterol is an important component of those membranes.

It helps regulate membrane structure and fluidity, allowing cells to maintain their integrity and interact appropriately with their environment.

Think of cholesterol less like a "bad substance" and more like a raw material your body uses to build and maintain itself.

What About "High" Cholesterol?

This is where the conversation needs more nuance.

A cholesterol panel doesn't tell the entire story of someone's metabolic health.

Total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, triglycerides, particle number, particle size, insulin resistance, inflammation, blood pressure, diet, exercise, genetics, and other factors can all contribute to cardiovascular risk.

So rather than looking at one number in isolation, it can be helpful to look at the whole picture.

And importantly, cholesterol is not inherently harmful simply because it exists in your bloodstream.

The body intentionally makes cholesterol—primarily in the liver—because it needs it.

The Bigger Picture

When it comes to health restoration, the question isn't always:

"How do I get my cholesterol as low as possible?"

A better question may be:

"What does my entire metabolic picture look like, and why are my cholesterol markers where they are?"

Your body is constantly trying to maintain balance. Cholesterol is one piece of that incredibly complex system.

Your brain needs it.
Your cells need it.
Your hormones are made from it.
Your body intentionally produces it.

So cholesterol deserves a more nuanced conversation than simply labeling it "good" or "bad."
